5 New Year’s Resolution Ideas and How to Stick to Them

Happy 2023 everyone! With the new year comes the obligatory New Year’s Resolution, eeeeek!! There is no better way to start your year than with a positive attitude and the determination to change something in your life for the better. Although we have good intentions, every year thousands of people break their resolutions just weeks into them. This is mainly because of the lack of both mental and physical preparation. As a result, people feel like they have failed, subsequently making them feel bad.

We have pulled together some of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions and added in a little advice for each.

New Year’s Resolution

1. Eat healthier

Ye old faithful! After 2 weeks of indulging in rich food and maybe one too many drinks, a lot of us will notice that some items of clothing fit a little more snuggly than prior to the Holiday period. This results in “eating healthier” is up there as a favorite as far as New Year’s Resolutions go.

Many find that it is easiest to go cold turkey, changing their diet completely from the offset. For others, this is overwhelmingly difficult. Sometimes people forget that they are making these changes for themselves. If you need to take it slow, eliminating things bit by bit, then do that.

2. Workout more

A New Year’s Resolution to target those unwanted Christmas pounds. This one fits side by side with the last. Obviously, you will see the biggest results by combining them but doing this can be a real shock to the system.

Working from home over the lockdown period has made it easy to slip into a lazier lifestyle. Moving from bed to a desk and eventually ending up on the sofa. Although home working definitely has its upsides, the waistline is not one of them.

The key to making sure you stick with your exercise routine is to find something you enjoy doing! We have a great blog post “Find a workout class you love & improve your fitness” to help. Check out our Sports and Leisure section for more inspiration.

3. Save Money

Christmas is a magical time of year, with lots of food and laughter. However, it is also an expensive time of year, seeing bank accounts across the world depleting. Which leads people to set their resolution to “save money”. January is a great time to focus on your year plans, whether that’s a holiday, a new car, moving house or investing.

4. Make time for yourself

Making time for yourself is really important. It will help you to decompress, manage stress, relax, and have a better focus, both at work and in your everyday life. Our society pushes us to work on average 40 hours a week, deducting that from the average 112 hours we are awake, it leaves us with 72 hours for everything else. So the key is to make it count, not necessarily by cramming as much in as possible.

It’s about balance and making sure some of that time is focused on you. Whether you decide to go on a well-deserved vacation, put aside time for a weekly hobby or start reading more frequently. Make sure you are enjoying life!

5. Learn something new

There is nothing like the feeling of finishing a year knowing you have gained knowledge of something that interests you or will help you move forward in life. Whether that be something to help you with work or a new language to accentuate your travel experience. Learning something new gives us a sense of achievement. So why not give it a go in 2023!

Most importantly, a New Year’s Resolution…

…isn’t there to torture you. Choose something realistic. Something you really feel you would be able to achieve in the time frame. By all means, start small, there is nothing to say you can’t add more goals to it during the year. Be sure to make sure you focus on the good you are doing and look for your small victories. Self-appreciation is vital!
